Constituent republic of the SE USSR, part of
Soviet Central Asia. area 447,400 sq
km/172,741 sq mi capital Tashkent towns
Samarkand physical oases in the deserts;
rivers: Amu Darya, Syr Darya; Fergana Valley
products rice, dried fruit, vines (all grown
by irrigation); cotton, silk population
(1987) 19,026,000; 69% Uzbek, 11% Russian, 4%
Tadzhik, 4% Tatar language Uzbek religion
Sunni Muslim history part of Turkestan, it
was conquered by Russia 1865-76. The Tashkent
soviet gradually extended its power 1917-24,
and Uzbekistan became a constituent republic
of the USSR 1925. Some 160,000 Mesketian
Turks were forcibly transported from their
native Georgia to Uzbekistan by Stalin 1944.
In June 1989 Tashlak, Yaipan, and Fergana
were the scenes of riots in which Mesketian
Turks were attacked; 70 were killed and 850
wounded. In Sept 1989 an Uzbek nationalist
organization, the Birhik (`Unity') Peoples's
Movement, was formed.
